USD Torero Store — Faculty

Course Material Adoptions

Faculty are the starting point for student access to course materials. When you submit your adoption on time, you make it possible for every student in your course to have what they need on the first day of class — regardless of their program.

Course Material Programs

Two programs. One adoption process.

USD uses two different course material programs depending on student population. Your adoption feeds into both — so one submission from you covers your students no matter which program they're in.

Undergraduate Students
Torero Unified Access

Torero Unified Access FAQ’s ›

All eligible undergraduate students are automatically enrolled in Torero Unified Access each semester. They pay a single flat rate and receive all required course materials — digital and print — before the first day of class.

For this program to work for your students, we need to know what your materials are before the procurement deadline. Digital titles are delivered directly through Canvas; print materials are fulfilled through the store. Without your adoption, your students can't receive their materials through the program.

The earlier you submit, the more options we have to source materials affordably and set up digital access in time.

Graduate & Law Students
Online Comparison Tool Course Materials

Graduate and Law students order their materials individually through our Online Comparison Tool, which compares pricing across new, used, rental, and digital options. Your adoption tells the system what to surface for your course so students can find and purchase the right materials.

If your adoption isn't in, your course simply won't appear correctly in the online portal — students will be left searching on their own, often finding wrong editions or missing required items entirely.

Timely adoptions also allow the store to acquire used copies during low-demand periods, which directly reduces what your graduate students pay out of pocket.

Why It Matters

Your adoption does more than you think

Submitting on time isn't administrative busywork. It has direct, tangible effects on your students' experience and your course's day-one readiness.

For Undergrads
Day-One Access
Torero Unified Access is built around the promise that every student has their materials before class starts. That promise depends entirely on knowing what those materials are. Your adoption is the prerequisite.
For Grad & Law
Lower Student Costs
Early adoptions allow the store to buy used copies when supply is high and prices are low. Late adoptions mean students pay new-book prices — or can't find the right edition at all.
For Everyone
Correct Editions
When your adoption is in the system, every student gets the exact edition you're teaching from. No more students showing up with the wrong version, missing chapters, or an international edition that doesn't match your page references.

What to Submit

Everything your students need — in one adoption

Your adoption can include any required or recommended course material, not just textbooks. The Online Comparison Tool adoption system supports all of the following:

Textbooks
You select the required and recommended titles. Search previously adopted titles or find new ones by ISBN or title. Torero Unified Access will only include required course materials. Recommended titles will be available for students to purchase separately.
Digital & eTextbooks
For Torero Unified Access courses, digital titles are delivered directly through Canvas
Publisher Courseware & Access Codes
MyLab, Connect, McGraw-Hill, and similar platforms. Include the ISBN when available. Contact us if you're unsure whether your platform is compatible.
Course Packs
Custom course packs and compiled reading packets can be submitted as custom titles.
OER & Open Materials
Please register all OER materials, even if they are free of charge. Submitting your requirements through the custom course link provides students with a clear roadmap and immediate access to their readings.
Non-Book Course Materials
Lab coats, goggles, calculators, and other required non-book items can be included so students can source everything in one place. Non-book course materials will need to be purchased separately.
How it works: Faculty course assignments are pulled from Banner and loaded into the adoption system, including your department, course, section, and contact information. Before each term, you'll receive a personalized email from USD@verbasoftware.com with a link directly to your assigned courses. Add your materials there — you can view previously adopted titles, search for new ones, or enter custom items.

FAQ

Common questions from faculty

I'm looking for the link to submit my adoption — where is it? ▼
Each semester, you'll receive a personalized email from USD@verbasoftware.com with a direct link to your assigned courses. That email is generated from your Banner course assignments and goes out before each term's adoption deadline. If you haven't received it and the deadline is approaching, contact us at textbooks@sandiego.edu or (619) 260-4551 and we'll get you sorted.
What if I haven't received the email yet? ▼
First, check your spam or junk folder for an email from USD@verbasoftware.com. If it's not there, your course assignments may not yet be fully loaded from Banner, or there may be a discrepancy with your email on record. Contact our textbook department and we'll confirm your assignment status and get your link resent.
Does submitting an adoption affect my academic freedom? ▼
Not at all. You choose whatever materials best serve your course and your students — textbooks, course packs, OER, publisher courseware, or anything else. The adoption system and the programs that rely on it handle procurement and delivery. Nothing about what you assign is influenced or restricted.
What's the deadline? ▼
Deadlines are communicated in the adoption email you receive before each term. Earlier is always better — the sooner your adoption is in, the more time we have to source used copies (which reduces graduate student costs), confirm digital licensing for Torero Unified Access, and ensure everything is in place before the first day of class.
Can I reuse my adoption from a previous semester? ▼
Yes. The adoption system lets you view and pull in your previously adopted titles when submitting a new adoption. You can adopt the same materials with a few clicks, then make any changes needed for the current term.
How do I request a desk copy? ▼
Desk copies are provided directly by publishers, not through the Torero Store. Once you've submitted your adoption, contact the publisher's academic representative for your title to request a complimentary instructor copy. Most major publishers have a faculty portal for this — you can also contact our textbook department and we can help you identify the right contact for your title.
What if I'm using OER or no textbook at all? ▼
Please still submit an adoption — even if it's to indicate no required materials or to list your OER resources. This helps the Torero Store confirm your course is accounted for, ensures Torero Unified Access students aren't waiting on materials that don't exist, and gives your students a clear, official record of what's expected before class begins.
What happens if I don't submit? ▼
For undergraduate courses, students enrolled in Torero Unified Access won't receive their materials through the program — they'll either have to find books on their own or show up to the first day without them. For graduate and law courses, your course won't appear correctly in the online portal, which means students are left searching independently and are more likely to purchase the wrong edition or pay higher prices. A missing adoption affects real students in a real and immediate way.
I need to change my materials after submitting — is that possible? ▼
Yes, but please contact us as soon as possible. Changes after the adoption deadline — especially mid-semester — can disrupt students who have already received or ordered materials based on your original submission. If a change is unavoidable, reach out to textbooks@sandiego.edu immediately so we can minimize the impact.
