Why does my adoption matter so much? ▼
Torero Unified Access guarantees every student has their materials before the first day of class — but only if we know what those materials are. Your adoption tells us what to source, procure, and deliver. Without it, students can't receive materials through the program, and the whole promise of day-one access falls short for your course. A timely adoption is the single most important thing you can do for your students through this program.
How do waitlisted students access my materials? ▼
For billing accuracy, Torero Unified Access only provisions materials for students officially on your Canvas roster. Students currently on the waitlist will not see the "eTextbook" link until they are fully enrolled. What you can do: If you assign work during the first week, we suggest posting a PDF of the first chapter to your Canvas "Files" section or a temporary trial link from the publisher to ensure waitlisted students don't fall behind while their enrollment is finalized.
How do I submit my adoption? ▼
Submit your textbook adoptions to the Torero Store as you normally would, and indicate that “I understand the Torero Unified Access is a digital first program unless otherwise noted.” The Torero Store will coordinate with the publisher to set up the digital link in Canvas and negotiate pricing. The earlier you submit, the better we can serve your students.
What are the adoption deadlines? ▼
Deadlines are posted each semester. General guidelines:
Fall & Summer: First week of April
Spring & Intersession: First week of November
The earlier you submit, the better we can serve your students.
Do faculty have to opt in to Torero Unified Access? ▼
No opt-in or opt-out process is required — all required materials are included automatically in a digital-first format. Faculty retain full academic freedom; the program handles procurement and delivery, not what you assign. If your course requires physical materials rather than digital, contact the Torero Store so we can accommodate your students appropriately. Be aware that physical-only requirements may affect program pricing.
Will Torero Unified Access affect my textbook selection or academic freedom? ▼
No. Faculty retain full academic freedom under Torero Unified Access. You choose the materials that best serve your course and your students. The program simply handles procurement, delivery, and cost structure — it does not influence or restrict what you assign.
How do I make sure students can see the digital textbook in Canvas? ▼
You must ensure the “eTextbook” link is enabled in your Canvas course navigation. To do this: go to Settings in your Canvas course, click the Navigation tab, find “eTextbook,” click the three dots next to it, select Enable, then click Save. If you need help, contact the Torero Store team.
Can I access student engagement analytics? ▼
Yes. The digital course materials delivered through VitalSource allow access to analytics showing how students are interacting with the text — which sections are being read, how frequently, and more. This allows you to identify struggling students early and adjust your approach based on actual engagement data.
How do I get a desk copy? ▼
The desk copy process is unchanged. Reach out directly to your publisher representative to request a desk or exam copy. When you speak with them, ask about the VitalSource Faculty Sampling Service for digital desk copies of adopted titles.
What if I use OER, library resources, or Reprographics content? ▼
You are free to continue using the same content as previous terms. If your course uses 100% free or open resources, for the convenience of students please still notify the Torero Store of your OER status so it is reflected in the course materials list. We will add a link to the OER resource in the student’s course materials page, directing them to Copley Library or the appropriate resource. For custom course pack content, include it in your adoption submission and we will coordinate printing.
What types of materials are covered? ▼
Torero Unified Access covers all required textbooks, digital textbooks, custom course packs, lab manuals, and required access codes. Items not covered include physical supplies such as lab coats, goggles, art supplies, and calculators. If you are unsure whether a specific item qualifies, contact the USD Torero Store.
How do publisher access codes (MyLab, Connect, McGraw-Hill, etc.) work? ▼
Required publisher courseware and access codes are covered under Torero Unified Access when they have an ISBN and are available for institutional licensing. Digital access is delivered through Canvas. Students who opt out can purchase access codes individually through Bookshelf or directly through the publisher. Contact the Torero Store if you are unsure whether your courseware platform is compatible.
What about version consistency? ▼
The program ensures every student in your class is using the exact same edition and format of the required text. This eliminates confusion during page-specific discussions or when referencing exercises — no more students saying “my edition doesn't have that page” or using an older international edition.
If I cancel my adoption, will my students still be charged? ▼
Torero Unified Access is a flat-rate, semester-level program covering all required materials across all enrolled courses. The fee is not tied to individual classes. If you cancel an adoption, there is no charge adjustment to the student's flat rate — but students in your course will not receive materials through the program. Please contact us as early as possible if your plans change.
What if I change my materials after the semester starts? ▼
We strongly encourage finalizing your adoption before the deadline. Mid-semester changes can affect students who have already opted in or out based on your original material list. If a change is unavoidable, contact the USD Torero Store as soon as possible so we can minimize disruption.
Do students keep their digital and physical course materials? ▼
Digital textbooks via VitalSource Bookshelf:
- Must be downloaded while the student has active access
- Perpetual downloads available for many titles
- Publisher platforms (MyLab, Connect, etc.) expire at term end per licensing terms
Physical books are theirs to keep.
I teach multiple sections. Do I need to submit an adoption for each? ▼
Please submit an adoption for each section separately to ensure all enrolled students receive their materials. If your sections use identical materials the process is quick, but each section must be on file so no students are missed.
Will students still be able to opt out? ▼
Yes. Student participation is not mandatory. Students can opt out through the eTextbook link in Canvas before the add/drop deadline each semester. Your timely adoption helps them make an informed decision about whether the flat rate makes sense for their course load.
What if a student tells me they didn't receive their materials? ▼
Direct the student to the USD Torero Store immediately. Our team can verify their enrollment status, confirm their Canvas access, and resolve any issues with print book pickup. Students can reach us at (619) 260-4551 or textbooks@sandiego.edu. VitalSource also offers 24/7 support for digital access issues.
How do I get help with the eTextbook link in Canvas? ▼
Contact the Torero Store team directly and a representative will assist you. Reach us at (619) 260-4551 or textbooks@sandiego.edu.
What happens if I don't submit an adoption? ▼
Students enrolled in your course will not receive materials through Torero Unified Access if no adoption is on file. Students will still be billed the $299 flat rate unless they opt out — but won’t receive the materials the program promises. Submitting your adoption takes minutes and makes a real difference for your students from day one. Contact us at (619) 260-4551 or textbooks@sandiego.edu if you have questions.
